Saj Abdoolakhan

Saj Abdoolakhan was appointed Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety executive director of Building and Energy in 2019, where he led the operations of WA’s regulator for the building, plumbing, electricity and gas industries.

In 2024, he was appointed deputy director general of the DMIRS' Industry Regulation and Consumer Protection group, which included oversight of service delivery. Mr Abdoolakhan also held the statutory roles of Building Commissioner and Director of Energy Safety.

Mr Abdoolakhan represented Western Australia on several national forums, including the Senior Officials Group of the Building Ministers’ Forum, the Australian Building Codes Board, the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council, the Gas Technical Regulators Committee and the Standards Australia Council.

Mr Abdoolakhan is an electrical engineer by profession. Before joining the public service, he led several multi-disciplined teams and major engineering projects in the petro-chemical, manufacturing and mining industries.
