In the lead up to its Perth launch on February 20 at Subiaco Square, cult dining phenomenon Wagamama has announced that Perth design duo sü will be designing bar staff uniforms for the new restaurant.
sü was begun by friends Sonia Audino and Silvana Cristillo and is now a successful fixture on the Perth fashion scene as well as being internationally stocked.
Ms Audino told WA Business News the corporate images of sü and Wagamama were quite similar, and that it was easy for the designers to slip into the mindset.
“It’s fantastic they have approached locals to get involved, and makes things a bit more unique and local,” she said.
Wagamama’s Sydney-based marketing manager Emma Seibold said the Perth store would be one of the biggest in Australia, with more than 200 seats in an environment, as well as an upmarket bar. She said the Wagamama noodle bar concept was about casual, communal, dynamic dining. The concept was started in the UK 15 years ago.
“Three of our restaurants have bars, and sü is designing the shirts for bar staff – we want that to be a bit more sophisticated, and sü have done some fantastic designs which we are also looking to roll out in Brisbane and Sydney as well,” Ms Seibold said.
“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the result – it’s directional yet wearable and comfortable.”
Japanese for ‘wilful, naughty child,’ Wagamama has proven to be an icon across the world, with venues in the UK, Ireland, Amsterdam, Dubai, Belgium and New Zealand.
Wagamama was also voted the world’s most popular restaurant by the Zagaat survey (the world’s largest), joining the exclusive ranks of Nobu and a string of the world’s best known dining icons.
With the first store opening in Sydney’s King Street wharf in 2002, Wagamama has grown to be a $20 million business in Australia.
Luke Fryer, who brought the Wagamama concept to Australia, was a finalist in the Ernst and Young entrepreneur of the year awards, which celebrate entrepreneurs who build and lead successful and dynamic businesses.
