More Western Australians are switching to electricity generated from renewable sources, with new figures from retailer Synergy showing the number of GreenPower customers more than doubled in 2007.
Synergy said its GreenPower customer base grew by almost 140 per cent from 3,343 to 8,013 in the 12 months to December 31, 2007.
In addition, the number of customers installing solar panels to generate their own electricity, and sell any excess to Synergy, had more than tripled from 117 to 501 during the year.
Spokesman Andrew Gaspar said climate change had increased interest in green energy, which was a significant factor contributing to the doubling in the take up of accredited renewable energy during the year.
"Our aim is to continue growing the number of customers purchasing accredited renewable energy."
"An increase in the Photovoltaic Rebate Program has made the installation of solar cells on household roofs more affordable and more attractive, and the more customers who install these the less reliant we are on conventional energy sources."
