Western Australia's central Wheatbelt has received a major economic boost, with the State Government allocating a further $4 million for development of the second stage at Avon Industrial Park.
Acting Planning and Infrastructure Minister Jon Ford and Mid-West and Wheatbelt Minister Kim Chance announced the funding for Stage 2 of the development today.
Mr Ford said that WA's continuing economic growth was accelerating demand for industrial land in Perth and surrounding regions, with Avon being recognised as a logical and significantly less expensive option to metropolitan sites.
"Five of the seven Stage 1 lots sold in the last 12 months clearly demonstrating that demand for industrial land in the Avon region is strong," he said.
"The State Government and the local community have made a significant investment in the park's development over the last six years, most recently with a power upgrade and installation of broadband telecommunications."
Mr Chance said the $4 million boost represented an exciting chapter in the park's development, expanding opportunities for existing residents and businesses in the region.
"When complete, Stage 2 should create more than 300 jobs for the local community, in addition to the 300 to 400 jobs expected on the completion of Stage 1," Mr Chance said.
"This type of development is vital to the region's future, providing for the needs of industries servicing the local rural and resources markets."
A subdivision application will soon be lodged with the WA Planning Commission for Stage 2 of the project that will comprise 17 lots ranging from 5,500sqm to 12.5ha, with an average lot size of 3.3ha.
The 473ha Avon Industrial Park is located 18km east of Northam on the Great Eastern Highway and is about 90 minutes from Perth.
Work on the 57ha second stage is expected to start towards the end of this year, with lots available in early 2008. Most Stage 2 lots will feature a 1:2 frontage to depth ratio and have been configured to enable buyers to amalgamate lots if required.
