THE state government has allocated $700,000 to widen a 43-kilometre stretch of road on South Coast Highway between BHP Billiton’s Ravensthorpe Nickel mine and Munglinup Bridge. The road was recognised as infrastructure of national significance, after a report handed down in June last year by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport and Regional Services recommended urgent consideration be given to assist the state and local governments to fund an upgrade of the road. The works, which will carried out by Southern Roads Services, will increase the sealed width to 8 metres in light of expected growth in traffic movements from the mine.
