The State Government has confirmed it is considering changes to liquor trading laws aimed at increasing competition on Sundays.
Treasurer Eric Ripper today outlined the government's policy, confirming an earlier report in which Tourism Minister Mark McGowan was believed to be preparing to take the recommendations to Cabinet next month.
A spokesman for Mr Ripper said the government would support Sunday trading by metropolitan liquor stores with the intention of creating more competition in the interests of consumers.
He said it was hoped the policy would be passed before the end of the year.
The government will need the support of the Upper House for the safe passage of the legislation.
The shift in policy comes at a time of heightened debate on the subject of liquor reform and follows liquor licensing reform proposals last year by an independent review committee.
