The major export operations at Port Hedland will be back in business later today after temporarily closing for category one Tropical Cyclone Peta.
Port Hedland Port Authority says conditions have improved in the past few hours with the swell and wind reducing enough to allow shipping operations to restart.
The weather bureau says a cyclone warning continues in coastal areas from Port Hedland to Dampier, including Karratha.
The cyclone is crossing the Pilbara coast just to the east of Point Samson and is expected to weaken during the evening, but gales with gusts to 100 kilometres are expected close to the cyclone centre over the next few hours.
