Another Perth small bar has been named the best in a national competition.
Varnish on King has been named the Small Bar of the Year in the Australian Bartender magazine’s Bar Awards.
The win comes less than a month after North Perth bar The Classroom was named the best metropolitan bar in the Australian Hotels Association awards.
Located in the old Smithmore house on King Street, Varnish on King opened last year under the ownership of Andy Freeman, who was formerly an operator of Luxe Bar in Highgate. (See BNIQ's full list of Perth small bars).
It takes a focus on high-quality local and imported wines and American whiskey.
The Brisbane Hotel and The Mechanics Institute were also singled out in the awards, being named as Western Australia’s best pub and cocktail bar respectively.
Meanwhile, Bobeche bartender Joe Singara was placed third in the national bartender of the year category.
It has been a positive week for Western Australia’s alcohol industry with, as Business News reported on Thursday, the state’s distillers have been recognised at international and national competitions.
The West Winds Gin, which is produced by holding company The Tailor Made Spirits Company, was awarded a double gold medal for its ‘The Broadside’ gin in the world wine and spirits competition held in New York.
It followed the success of the Great Southern Distilling Company, which received four awards from the Malt Whisky Society of Australia.
