An online service promoting the Western Australian seafood industry has met with great success in exposing local suppliers and companies to the international seafood market.
The Department of Fisheries launched the website, www.SeafoodWesternAustralia.net, in December 2004 to provide international seafood buyers access to a database of local suppliers and seafood companies.
Fisheries Minister Jon Ford believes the initiative is leading the way in seafood promotion.
Seafood buyers can search for exporters by species or send a email request directly to all suppliers listed in the website's database. Local suppliers and processors can also access the website to add their details to the supplier database.
"Since its launch, SeafoodWesternAustralia.net has experienced nearly 30,000 hits and has proven to be popular with overseas buyers, mainly from the United States, China and Singapore," the minister said.

Western Australia leading the way in seafood promotion.
New initiatives developed in Western Australia are leading the way in seafood promotion, Fisheries Minister Jon Ford said today.
Ahead of the world's largest seafood exposition to be held in Brussels this month, Mr Ford has urged international seafood buyers to go online to access high quality WA seafood.
"The Department of Fisheries developed the very successful website: http://www.SeafoodWesternAustralia.net - enabling international seafood buyers to access a database of local suppliers and seafood companies," Mr Ford said.
"It also includes useful links to WA's world-renowned and best practice Western Rock Lobster Fishery.
"Since its launch in December 2004, SeafoodWesternAustralia.net has experienced nearly 30,000 hits and has proven to be popular with overseas buyers, mainly from the United States, China and Singapore.
"The site is easy to use and seafood buyers can search for exporters by species or send a email request directly to all suppliers listed in the website's database."
Local suppliers and processors can also access the website to add their details to the supplier database, ensuring the website is constantly accurate and up to date.
"Additionally, WA's own regular seafood and fisheries industry newsletter WA Fish eNews has grown as an online tool since it started since 2000," the Minister said.
Mr Ford encouraged WA's seafood industry to explore the opportunities that new technologies such as the Internet could offer as inexpensive and effective marketing and promotional tools.
"Government will continue to support industry initiatives and ideas to build on our enviable reputation for competitive and high quality produce," he said.
"The European seafood exposition in Brussels will showcase the best Australia has to offer and also shows the great work being done by WA's commercial fishing sector to promote our clean and green seafood."
