The University of Notre Dame Australia has announced its chancellor, Hon Justice Neville Owen, has resigned from the position, to be replaced by Dr Michael Quinlan for an 18-month term.
The University of Notre Dame Australia has announced its chancellor, Hon Justice Neville Owen, has resigned from the position, to be replaced by Dr Michael Quinlan for an 18-month term.
Dr Quinlan, who has been acting in the position, has been a trustee of the university since its inception and was appointed deputy chancellor in 2006.
He has held professorial roles in medicine at both the University of Western Australia and Notre Dame.
Justice Owen, who has resigned due to work commitments, will remain a trustee and governor of the university.

The University of Notre Dame Australia announced today that the Chancellor the Hon Justice Neville Owen had resigned from his position due to work commitments. He had been on leave for the past six months and was due to return on 1 July. However in a statement to the Trustees Justice Owen said the circumstances which had caused him to seek leave were still present and he felt that leave of absence for a longer period was not appropriate.
The Trustees accepted his resignation with very deep regret and expressed their appreciation and admiration for the great job he had done.
In his statement to the Trustees, Justice Owen expressed his continuing commitment to the goals and ideals of the University. He will remain closely involved as a Trustee and a Governor.
Vice Chancellor, Dr Peter Tannock said, "Neville Owen has been an outstanding Chancellor of Notre Dame. He has been an excellent Board Chairman and leader of the governance structure of the University.
"For me he has been a much valued counsellor and friend in the very demanding growth period we have gone through in the last few years, especially with the development of the Sydney Campus. I am delighted that Justice Owen will continue as a Governor and Trustee of the University."
The Trustees appointed the Acting Chancellor, Dr Michael Quinlan, as Chancellor from 1 July 2008 for a term of eighteen months.
Dr Quinlan is one of the University's founding fathers and has been a Trustee of the University since its inception. He was appointed Deputy Chancellor in 2006. He was pivotal in establishing the College of Health and the Fremantle School of Medicine.
Dr Quinlan has had a most distinguished career as one of Western Australia's leading physicians and as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Australia as well as Professor of Medicine at Notre Dame.
Dr Tannock said he was delighted with the appointment of Professor Quinlan.
"Michael Quinlan has an enormous reputation in the community as a physician and as a leader in health care and medical education. He has intimate knowledge of the University and is highly respected by the Governors, Director and Trustees. He will be a major support for our new Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond."
