New mining boss at Goldman

Investment bank Goldman Sachs has appointed Gavi Friedland as head of metals and mining in Australia and New Zealand, taking over from Perth-based Peter Watson.

Mr Friedland spent several years with Goldman in Perth before transferring to Melbourne in 2019.

In his new role, he will maintain existing client responsibilities as well as taking overall responsibility for metals and mining.

Under the new structure, Mr Watson is expected to continue working closely with the firm’s major clients in the resources sector while also managing its Perth office, which has five staff.

Goldman is one of a handful of big investment banks to have maintained a long-term presence in Perth, along with Macquarie Capital and UBS.

Sydney-based Barrenjoey Capital Partners is a new market entrant that will add to the competition.

Its local clients include nickel miner Western Areas, which is the target of a preliminary takeover proposal from IGO.

Goldman’s Perth team has also been advising BHP on the announced sale of its petroleum division.

In equity capital markets, Goldman has been a lead manager on several major capital raisings for resources clients including Vulcan Energy Resources, Bellevue Gold and ioneer.
