Premier Alan Carpenter has today announced the promotion of Tony McRae to state cabinet, confirming recent speculation that the Riverton MLA had gained the numbers to beat Swan Hills MLA Jaye Radisich and Yokine MLA Bob Kucera.
Mr Carpenter said Mr McRae was elected by caucus at a special meeting held today to fill the vacant ministerial position left by former Police and Justice minister John D'Orazio.
"I congratulate and welcome Mr McRae to the state cabinet and look forward to working with him in the ongoing delivery of the government's key priorities," the Premier said.
Mr Carpenter said portfolio allocations would be announced later this week. Mr D'Orazio recently quit cabinet after increasing pressure from within his own party ranks to resign. His resignation came after months of scrutiny into his affairs after it was revealed he had not paid employee superannuation contributions and, more recently, was left red faced after failing to pay a speeding fine on time.
