Local architects win TAFE designs

TAFE’s Mandurah and Broome campuses will receive new facilities worth a combined $19 million, with the state government having appointed architects to the projects.

Peter Hunt Architect, based in West Perth, will design a $9.2 million hospitality and tourism training centre at South Metropolitan TAFE’s Mandurah campus.

The building will be used for training in commercial cooking, tourism and events management.

Site analysis at Mandurah is under way, with construction expected to start in May next year.

Mandurah MLA David Templeman said the new building would revitalise the Peel region, as well as provide opportunities for local jobseekers.

“It is really terrific to see this government investing heavily into providing meaningful career pathways for youth and the wider community in the Mandurah area,” he said.

Meanwhile, Engawa Architects has secured the works to design two training centres at North Regional TAFE’s Broome campus, worth $10 million.

Engawa is based in the area and recently completed work on state government projects, including the design of a new primary school in Broome and a new automotive workshop at TAFE’s Halls Creek campus.

The architect will now design buildings at TAFE Broome for training in hospitality and tourism, and in hair and beauty.

Engawa will also design an outdoor meeting place to link the two buildings.

The project would have a strong focus on supporting Aboriginal businesses and creating local jobs, the state government said.

The new buildings at TAFE Mandurah and Broome were announced in July, as part of the state government’s $229 million Rebuilding our TAFEs initiative – of which $167 million was allocated to college upgrades around WA.

Rebuilding our TAFEs was included in the WA Recovery Plan.
