Leighton Contractors has set up a new indigenous joint venture to deliver infrastructure works for the state government’s $517 million Ord River irrigation scheme.
The joint venture, named Leighton WannaWork, will install 23 road box culverts along the ne Moonamang and Wooljim roads in the Kimberley.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the agreement would ensure significant participation by local business in the Ord River scheme.
“I am very pleased with the work of the contractors, traditional owners and the project team in continuing to achieve indigenous engagement in what is a challenging and exciting project creating a vibrant future for our country,” Mr Grylls said.
“WannaWork Contracting Services is an example of what can be achieved by Aboriginal people in businesss, and its employees have impressed the Kununurra community and the Government with their work ethic over recent years.”
The WannaWork JV employs 25 Aboriginal people across a range of civil works projects.
