Mineral exploration company, Legend Mining has launched a 3D seismic survey aimed at uncovering deeper drill targets at its exciting Mawson nickel, copper and cobalt discovery in the Fraser Range of Western Australia. Previous drilling at Mawson returned an assortment of serious nickel and copper hits including an extraordinary 31.1 metres at 2.80 per cent nickel and 2.04 per cent copper from 200.7m down-hole.
Located some 250 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie, Mawson lies within the company’s Rockford project that covers more than 3,000 square kilometres of tenure within the celebrated Fraser Range.
The region came to prominence nearly a decade ago following Sirius Resources’ revered Nova-Bollinger nickel, copper and platinum discovery about 120km away.
A 14.3 million tonne resource going 2.3 per cent nickel and 0.9 per cent copper has subsequently been defined at the now producing Nova-Bollinger mine, operated by mining titan, IGO Limited.
Legend says the seismic survey at Mawson will cover an area stretching for more than 3km in length and 1.5km in width. The mineralised intrusion identified to date at Mawson takes in 3km by 1.2km and remains open in all directions according to Legend.
Notably, the survey is designed to investigate the mineralised intrusion to at least 1,000m below surface. Drilling at Mawson so far has not reached depths greater than 500m which means the company is now entering the great unknown.
Other notable intercepts from past drilling at the prospect include 19.2m at 1.69 per cent nickel and 1.23 per cent copper from 97.9m and 12m at 2.36 per cent nickel and 1.36 per cent copper from 239.2m.
Legend Mining Managing Director, Mark Wilson said:“This is the first seismic survey Legend has carried out at the Rockford project. This 3D seismic survey is designed to investigate to depths greater than 1000m below the surface. Legend’s existing drill data is broadly speaking to 500m below surface. Our ability to compare this known data with the seismic interpretations will provide a basis for ranking deeper diamond drill targets for next year.”
Results from the survey are anticipated to be released early in the new year.
Legend plans to incorporate results from the survey with existing geophysical, geological, geochemical and structural data to pin-point drill targets for its 2022 field season across the Mawson intrusion.
With nickel trading at more than US$19,000 per tonne, levels not seen in seven years and copper flirting with historical highs at about US$9,500 per tonne, it won’t take much for Legend to quicken a few pulses if it can get onto anything decent at depth at Mawson.
