Perth-based engineering groups Kerman Contracting and Monadelphous Group have announced contract wins collectively worth more than $300 million at CITIC Pacific Mining's Sino Iron development near Cape Preston.
Applecross-based Kerman has been awarded a $146 million contract at the Sino Iron magnetite project for structural, mechanical and electrical work on processing lines.
“By installing 15,000 tonnes of structural steel, 800 pieces of mechanical equipment, 40km of pipe and 80km of cable, Kerman will contribute to significantly complete the remaining four processing lines at Sino Iron,” Kerman project director Klaus Hartmann said.
The two-year work scope covers the autogenous grinding mill, pebble crusher and stockpile tunnel areas for processing lines at the project.
“The front end of the project contains pebble crushers, which crush the small rocks into a finer material that's then crushed again into an even finer material in the AG mill, and from there it goes into another processor at the back end of the plant,” Kerman executive director Mark Nagle said.
Kerman was recently awarded a $54 million contract with Sino Iron for civil and concrete works for the processing lines, and a $13 million contract for the installation of a ring motor on the AG mill.
Mr Nagle said he expects to expand his workforce to about 250 to carry out the work.
Kerman also won a $67 million contract for the design and construction of a grain export facility for Quattro Ports, a joint venture between Qubi Holdings, Noble Group, Cargill Australia and Emerald Grain, at Port Kembla in New South Wales.
It also won an $18 million contract for the construction of two sample preparation laboratories for the Roy Hill iron ore project.
Meanwhile, engineering firm Monadelphous secured a $160 million iron ore construction contract with Sino Iron at the same Cape Preston project.
The contract comprises of structural, mechanical and piping installation and commissioning works with concentrator lines at the project.
“We are very pleased to be awarded this contract with Sino Iron at Cape Preston, and look forward to participating in the delivery of another phase of development at this significant Western Australian iron ore project,” Monadelphous managing director Rob Velletri said.
Monadelphous was recently awarded a series of new maintenance services contracts and contract extensions worth $140 million, including a three-year mechanical and service agreement with BHP Billiton Nickel West for its WA operations, and a one-year contract with Rio Tinto for dragline and shovel shutdowns at its Mount Thorley Warkworth and Hunter Valley operations in New South Wales.
It was also recently awarded $250 million worth of contracts on the massive Australia Pacific LNG project in Queensland.
