UK-based Serco has been selected as the preferred bidder to provide non-clinical facilities and support management at the Fiona Stanley Hospital.
Serco runs the ticketing and transport information service for Transperth, as well as providing health and allied services to prisoners at Borallon and Acacia prisons.
The company also is the owner-operator of the Indian Pacific train, provides correction and rehabilitation services at Acacia Prison and maritime support to the Navy at HMAS Sterling through its joint venture with DMS Maritime.
Serco will now negotiate with the state government on the contract for non-clinical services at Fiona Stanley Hospital, which includes engineering and building maintenance, security, ground maintenance, linen, cleaning, catering, waste services, managed equipment services, transport, procurement, sterilisation, reception and clerical services.
During the evaluation, the state government team reviewed sites in Australia and internationally where Serco already provided health support services.
“At every hospital, staff and patients confirmed that services were of the highest quality and worked cohesively with public sector clinical staff,” Health Minister Kim Hames said.
Serco’s Australian chief executive David Campbell welcomed the opportunity to proceed with negotiations to service the hospital.
“Through a truly integrated service delivery model, Serco Australia would assist WA Health in their transformation of healthcare service delivery,” he said.
“Our intention and plans are not only to deliver services innovatively but to genuinely contribute to improving the health of those who are cared for at Fiona Stanley Hospital.”
Serco is listed on the FTSE and has 6,000 employees in Australia and Hong Kong.
