PROMINENT Western Australian businesswoman Janet Holmes a Court has received the president’s prize at the second annual Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards held in Perth last week. Melbourne-based Graeme Gunn won the 2011 gold medal for architecture at the ceremony organised by the Australian Institute of Architects. He is best known for his current role as principal architect for VicUrban, as foundation dean of the RMIT Faculty of Architecture and Building, and for his early innovative housing work, particularly for Melbourne’s Merchant Builders.
The president’s prize recognises contributions to the advancement of architecture outside the traditional areas of design, practice and education. Ms Holmes a Court was awarded for her work as Australian commissioner for the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, where she became the public face of biennale for Australia. She has agreed to act in this role again for the 2012 biennale.
Ms Holmes a Court chairs private company Heytesbury and contractor John Holland Group, as well as the WA Symphony Orchestra, Australian Children’s Television Foundation and WA Urban Design Centre. She is a Commissioner of Tourism WA and board member of the newly formed Chamber of Arts and Culture WA.
