Alas, the mighty Campo de’ Fiori has gone into administration. Zimbabwe immigrants Yvette and Duncan Barker purchased the Ardross icon in November 2000. Although the couple are highly experienced in the restaurant game, having owned and operated restaurants in Zimbabwe, the couple have been unable to turn around a decline in dining numbers, particularly on busy nights, and have recently appointed administrators. Administrators Clout and Associates are trying to sell the restaurant as quickly as possible in an attempt to get new owners in before the goodwill of the restaurant is eroded. They are trying to put the brakes on deteriorating goodwill by placing for sale notices in daily papers and erecting a sign on the restaurant saying the restaurant will be closed for the month of March. Yvette said shortly after the purchase of Campo de’ Fiori that the pair had decided to quit their long-running involvement in Zimbabwe’s hospitality due to political tension in the country. They purchased the popular restaurant from Perth’s restaurant master Umberto Tinelli. Umberto has since purchased a site in West Perth and built the stylish Il Principe Gran Cafe. Yvette also told Business News in early 2001 that they realised it was not easy following in the footsteps of a well-known restaurateur. She said it was the first time the pair had bought an existing business but they recognised the risks of coming to a new country and starting a business from scratch. Clout and Associate is taking expressions of interest for the restaurant.

There was plenty of hype last week from David Jones, with the official launch of the return of the chic brand name. What there wasn’t plenty of hype about was the new restaurant that will be incorporated in the Hay Street mall. According to the company’s official media release, details of the restaurant will be released in April. What they did say, is that there will be a combination of indoor and outdoor dining and that it will overlook the Hay Street Mall. Gusto can tell you that the restaurant will be located on the fourth floor and will have capacity for 100 people. David Jones is currently advertising for a chef and sous-chef to assist in the “set-up, operating, and growth of the restaurant into one of Perth’s most discerning CBD restaurants”. The call for a chef and sous chef specifies three years’ experience in a similar role, but left the door open for young chefs to prove their worth: “While you may not have all the experience in the world, you may have the creative skills and youthful exuberance we need.” Interested chefs should contact the David Jones’ human resources department.

Organic fruit delivery has become very popular and if you are interested in all things healthy, visit this site: www.ohmworld.com.au. The site offers the whole box and dice, and I mean it!
There are the traditional fruit and veg, but there is just about anything you can imagine available for delivery. Toothpaste, sunscreen, soap and tampons are just a few items that make the owners of this company a one-stop organic shop.
From baby products to most food condiments, this is a very comprehensive list of organic produce. Chris Rickson, owner of OHMWorld said Australian Organic certifiers certified all the produce he sold and the particular country’s organic body certified any international produce he sold. He is offering free delivery to first-time purchasers at OHMWorld. Regular delivery is about $5.50.

Yes, Easter is fast approaching, which means it’s time for the, no, not chocolate binge, but the annual Taste of the Valley Festival at the Swan Valley. Held over five weekends, beginning from Saturday March 30, there is plenty of fine food, wine and,
yes, even chocolate to indulge in.
As the festival begins on Easter Weekend, it is only fitting that the Margaret River Chocolate Company kicks the festival off with the Easter Eggstravaganza. The boutique chocolate company will be offering giveaways, free tastings, and special offers. But there is more to this festival than chocolate! Some of the region’s most renowned operators will present entertainment, cooking demonstrations, art exhibitions, and a whole lot more.
Gusto will keep you updated on events but if you want to plan ahead visit www.swan-valley-holiday.com.au or phone the Swan Valley Tourism Council’s information line on 1900 999 900.

Cosham Wines, a small family-owned and operated vineyard is hosting a wine dinner later this month.
Not a lot of small operators host these evenings, so if you want to try some of the vineyard’s range, this would be an opportune time. The evening will be held at Smith Mill Restaurant in Glen Forrest on Friday 22 March. Tickets are $60 and include food and wine.
