Agriculture and Food Minister Kim Chance today welcomed Gull Petroleum Pty Ltd as the first fuel retailer in Western Australia to offer biodiesel to motorists.
Agriculture and Food Minister Kim Chance today welcomed Gull Petroleum Pty Ltd as the first fuel retailer in Western Australia to offer biodiesel to motorists.
Mr Chance said Gull's entry into the biofuels sector was in keeping with its innovative and proactive approach to biofuel development issues in WA.
"The State Government is committed to advancing science and innovation, as well as enhancing Western Australia's unique environment," he said.
"Gull's initiative supports both of these key priorities and provides the opportunity for diesel users in WA to embrace the concept of biodiesel, which is very much the fuel for the future."
State Biofuels Taskforce chair Graham Giffard MLC said biodiesel provided significant benefits, in both environmental and economic terms.
"A biofuels industry in WA will provide a more environmentally-friendly approach to fuel consumption, which complements the State Government's 'clean and green' position," Mr Giffard said.
"Alternative fuel sources offer an excellent opportunity for the sustainability of our natural resources in Australia into the future."
B20 Biodiesel has the same combustion properties as fossil diesel, and can be used in existing diesel engines with no modification, offering an alternative internal combustion engine fuel.
Biodiesel offers many environmental advantages compared with diesel including low sulphur emissions; approximately 35 per cent less carbon dioxide and sub-10 micron particles; and nearly the same amount of nitrous oxide. It is also biodegradable which is ideal for marine industries.
Mr Chance said he encouraged members of the public to give biodiesel a 'go' and make up their own minds about the potential benefits.

Minister welcomes WA biofuels initiative.
Agriculture and Food Minister Kim Chance today welcomed Gull Petroleum Pty Ltd's leadership in the biofuels market in Western Australia.
Mr Chance said Gull's entry into the biofuels sector, as the first fuel retailer in WA to offer biodiesel to motorists, was in keeping with their innovative and proactive approach to biofuel development issues.

"Mineral or fossil diesel is produced from heavy crude oil, and Australia's reserves are expected to be nearing exhaustion by 2012. This will have a significant impact on the domestic economy and Australia's balance of trade.
