Govt plans $62m Kwinana Fwy upgrade

The state and federal governments have committed $62 million towards widening a section of the Kwinana Freeway in a bid to reduce congestion on the major road.

The project will allow the widening of the section between Roe Highway and Armadale Road, with the state and federal governments each providing $31 million towards the upgrades.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the corridor was experiencing strong traffic growth which was forecast to continue.

"The project is an investment in the future of Western Australia's transport needs and is part of a comprehensive plan to help alleviate congestion issues in and around our city," he said.

Construction is set to commence mid-year and be completed late next year.

The Labor federal government last year announced it would deliver the extension but did not put a dollar figure on the project at the time, saying the works would be funded using existing savings.
