Gindalbie Metals has awarded Downer EDI a $64 million contract for electrical and instrumentation works at its Karara iron ore project in the Mid West.
The construction contract comprises electrical and instrumentation works for the project’s 8 million tonne per annum magnetite concentrator and will employ more than 260 workers.
The works include construction of the main concentrator buildings, mechanical installations, installation of structural steel, piping and conveyers and provision of power and instrumentation to equipment.
Gindalbie managing director Tim Netscher said the contract, and the structural, mechanical and piping contract in August were the final major construction packages to be awarded for the Karara project.
“The structural, mechanical and piping (SMP) activities have already seen a rapid transformation of the landscape at Karara as the key parts of the concentrator come together,” Mr Netscher said in a statement.
“The E&I contract represents the final step in constructing the processing plant, prior to commissioning this world-class iron ore processing facility.
“With both the E&I and SMP teams working at full capacity by early next year, the Karara project will ramp up to its peak construction activity levels with well over 1,500 personnel on site.
“This is a very exciting time as we move into the final phase of project delivery.”
