GHD wins Claremont station contract

Engineering consultancy GHD has been awarded a $6.7 million contract to design upgrades to the rail network around Claremont train station as part of the state government’s Metronet project.

Under the contract, GHD will design the turnbacks, supporting track work and upgrades to station facilities to meet current disability standards.

The turnbacks will allow trains travelling from the $1.9 billion Forrestfield-Airport link to turn around west of Claremont station and travel back to Forrestfield.

The state government said the infrastructure is necessary to increase the frequency of trains on the Fremantle line in anticipation of growing demand for public transport from the Forrestfield-Airport link.

“A number of alternative locations were considered,” the government said.

“This area was selected because nearby development will increase the demand for a more frequent peak period service from Claremont station, it has the space within the rail corridor and is located halfway along the Fremantle line, which is the ideal position for trains to maintain a higher frequency service for the inner stations.”

Construction of the Claremont station project is expected to begin in mid-2019, with completion forecast for early 2021.

The project also includes a modification to the existing principal shared path, along with revisions to station access and an extension of the station platform to accommodate future six-car sets.

GHD was the lead design consultant for the Salini Impregilo- NRW Holdings joint venture, which is completing the Forrestfield-Airport link project.

The company has also been contracted for preliminary work on the planned Karnup station, south of Rockingham on the Mandurah line.

GHD has previously completed a design contract for the $1 billion Gateway WA road infrastructure project.
