Energy Minister Francis Logan has welcomed the proposed upgrade of the
Dampier-to-Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline, saying it would be a tremendous boost to employment and the capacity of major industries throughout Western Australia.
The 1,500km pipeline was built in 1984 and has a current capacity of 600TJ a day.
Stage Four of the expansion, due to be completed in January 2007, will add more than 100TJ a day, and stage five will add an extra 375TJ a day when completed in 2009.
Mr Logan said the Stage Five expansion was in the best interests of the State.
"It is a reflection on the terrific growth that is occurring in WA that this multi-million expansion is more than 10 years ahead of initial projections," he said.
"It will go a long way to creating an even more reliable electricity supply for Perth consumers and help develop many gas-powered projects in the South-West."
The Minister said the expansion, which still needed to be approved by the Economic Regulation Authority, would involve hundreds of construction jobs in a range of activities including civil works and transport.
He said he was also pleased by the pipeline owners' commitment to 65-70 per cent local content on the total project.
