TENDERS have been called for construction of the proposed
North Quay rail loop and Stage 1 of the new North Quay rail terminal at
Fremantle.
The new rail loop will allow for the proposed re-development
of the Leighton Marshalling yards, creating a more direct and efficient rail
service to the North Quay container terminals.
The rail loop will require a bridge across Tydeman Road,
close to the existing rail bridge, and will pass behind the Railway Hotel.
Development of the rail terminal will necessitate the
realignment of the southernmost section of Port Beach Road.
The terminal, to be built in two stages, will cater for
trains up to 600 metres long.
Meanwhile, construction of a new public access road behind Victoria
Quay has commenced, as has relocation of a section of the nearby freight
railway.
The $4.9 million project will open additional space for the
proposed commercial precinct at Victoria Quay, as well as alleviate some
traffic problems in the west-end of Fremantle It is scheduled for completion in
late October.
