The City of Fremantle has moved a step closer to becoming the state’s first local authority to ban plastic bags, and is in the process of recruiting more councils to also adopt the laws.
The council said its strategic and general services committee last night backed the plan, and the law would now be presented at a council meeting on July 25 to formally introduce the changes.
A six-week formal advertising and comment phase will follow the meeting.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said he was pleased to pass the first hurdle to becoming WA’s first plastic bag free council.
“We’ve also had discussions with the Towns of Vincent and Nedlands about getting them to pass similar legislation at the same time,” Dr Pettitt said.
“This hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we think a collaborative approach would maximise the benefits and we’re happy to share our findings with other like-minded councils.”
Meanwhile, the city has ordered biodegradable dog refuse bags to replace bags in use at parks at reserves.
