The ASX-listed company behind Dan Murphy’s and BWS is in the process of purchasing family-owned liquor store Swanbourne Cellars.
Located in Swanbourne village, the bottle shop has been owned by the Morgan family since 1989 and is known as a specialist wine store.
It operates as part of independent bottle shop cooperative Liquor Barons.
An Endeavour Group spokesperson confirmed the sale and said it would settle in December 2021.
“We consider it a great fit with our portfolio, and subject to the completion of settlement, we look forward to welcoming the store to the group and to servicing the local community,” the spokesperson told Business News.
The spokesperson said the company had not decided whether the store would be turned into a BWS, Dan Murphy’s or continue to operate as Swanbourne Cellars in the long term.
"We have no immediate plans in relation to the future brand or format of the store and will continue trading as Swanbourne Cellars until such time as a decision is made,” they said.
Liquor Barons general manager Chris O’Brien said the Morgans had built Swanbourne Cellars into one of a handful of go-to wine stores in Perth.
“Liquor Barons has enjoyed an extraordinary period of growth and continues to attract stores at an exceptional rate, but we are always sad to lose such an iconic store and a long-term cooperative member like Swanbourne Cellars,” Mr O’Brien told Business News.
“Liquor Barons, as a cooperative, are sad to see the Morgans move on to whatever is next as they retire, and we wish them all the best.
“They have been the most wonderful members and great businesspeople.”
He said the store’s manager Steve Perry, who had been in his role for the past 25 years, was leaving to join another Liquor Barons.
Endeavour Group demerged from the Woolworths Group in June 2021.
It subsequently listed on the ASX with a market capitalisation of $10.8 billion, making it one of the 50th largest companies on the exchange.
According to the group’s 2022 financial year first quarter update, it opened ten BWS stores and two Dan Murphy’s in the period, adding to its 1,643-strong retail network.
