In a statement released today, Dr Edwards said she would continue as MP for Maylands and that her decision to resign was for personal, family reasons.
Dr Edwards has been the minister for the Environment since 2001 and minister for Science over the past 12 months under the Gallop Labor Government.
In her ministerial role, Dr Edwards oversaw the end of logging of old growth forests and created 36 new national parks and reserves. She spearheaded the introduction of a comprehensive marine conservation network and introduced tough environmental legislation.
