WORK has commenced on the Subiaco Sustainable Demonstration Home, an environmentally friendly display home in the heart of Subiaco Centro.
The project aims to demonstrate how ecologically sensitive housing design can be an attractive and practical solution for all homes and renovations.
The two-storey home is being built alongside conventional demonstration homes to form the display village for the latest subdivision of the Subiaco Redevelopment Area, Subiaco Rise.
Special features of the home will include:
p passive solar design;
p renewable energy sources;
p water sensitive design;
p sustainable landscaping;
p energy efficient lighting and appliances;
p low allergen and low toxicity materials; and
p universal design.
The home is expected to be completed in November 2003 and will be open to the public for two years.
There will be a host of activities during the two-year home-open period including educational tours for school, industry and community groups, a public art competition, school competitions, interactive displays and website monitoring.
Project partners are HIA Greensmart, Sustainable Energy Development Office, Murdoch University – Environmental Technology Centre, and the Subiaco Redevelopment Authority.
