EC&M workers returning amid uncertainty

Nearly 160 of EC&M’s 400 employees will be back at work in September, with administrators progressing deals with major clients since the business hit the wall last week.

Business News revealed EC&M had entered administration last Thursday, with Clint Joseph and Martin Jones from KPMG appointed to run the 33-year-old company.

In a release today, Mr Joseph said more than 100 staff were already back at work.

“Although there is still significant uncertainty about the future of the business, I am pleased to report positive progress with two of EC&M’s largest clients, and that some funds are starting to flow back into the business,” he said. 

“One-hundred-and-thirteen staff are already back working on the Tianqi Lithium project, and 24 staff are expected to be back working for grain handler, CBH Group over the coming weeks, including 10 staff back by the end of this week. 

“Further to this, 13 staff across two other projects with Alcoa and CITIC Pacific Mining will also be back at work within the next few days.

“These staff will be paid for the outstanding week’s wages progressively from tomorrow.

“Discussions are continuing with EC&M’s other clients, and this remains the focus of our efforts at this time. 

“Until these conclude, we unfortunately cannot provide certainty of further outcomes for other staff, and creditors.

“We will continue to update employees and stakeholders as decisions are taken.”

Electrical specialists EC&M had won a Rising Stars award in 2012.

The company owed at least $10 million to secured creditors.

The board had attempted a restructure in recent weeks with support of clients and the bank, but had been unsuccessful.
