This was the third project Hillam Architects has completed for the clients. The original traditional Subiaco Federation style house had fallen into disrepair and was well overdue for redevelopment.
David Hillam said that the front elevation and external fabric of the original residence had been retained and simply renovated in their existing form.
“Beyond the entrance, all aspects relating to traditional interior, except for the original floorboards have been ‘stripped’ back to a contemporary interior,” he said.
“The contemporary composition of the extension deliberately departs from the traditional form of the original residence, acting as a foil and example as to how traditional housing stock can be reused in a manner which fits with current lifestyle expectations.”
The jury said the rear addition was constructed around a north-facing courtyard containing a swimming pool, around which most of the house is constructed. The front of the original house has been retained and the rooms have been elegantly converted to bedrooms and an impressive ensuite.
