Diversified agribusiness, food and logistics company, Craig Mostyn Group has overcome its first major hurdle over plans to expand its Linley Valley pork abattoir in Wooroloo, after the Shire of Northam last night approved the group's application.
Craig Mostyn's pork division, which trades under PPC Linley Valley Fresh, has been embroiled in a six-month battle with a group of local residents to have its $20 million facility approved.
The lodgement of the abattoir proposal with council late last year also coincided with a planning application from El Caballo's Matthew Pavlinovich for the development of a residential housing estate, Killara Estate, on neighbouring land.
The residential estate would have reportedly included residences between 400-500 metres from the abattoir border, within the Environmental Protection Authority's recommended buffer zone.
The PPC facility currently processes 98 per cent of the state's pork supplies, and more than half of Australia's fresh pork supply into Singapore.

PPC Linley Valley Fresh General Manager, Ron Penn, today welcomed last night's decision by the Shire of Northam to approve PPC's application to build a new sheep and cattle processing facility and skin and hide treatment plant at its Wooroloo site.
"There's no doubt the Shire has done the right thing by all of its ratepayers too by also acknowledging that this is just one step forward in the planning approval process, with the next stage to be decided by the Environmental Protection Authority," he said.
PPC will invest more than $20 million in the new state of the art facilities, which will
ultimately offer jobs to more than 100 people, mainly from the local community.
Mr Penn said that such a refreshing decision by the Shire acknowledged the responsible approach PPC and its parent company, Craig Mostyn Group, had always taken throughout the application and approval process.
"We want to be a responsible corporate citizen by helping build the social and financial fabric of the regional community we operate in and also do our bit, as an export driven business, to generate jobs and wealth for the state of Western Australia.
"To achieve that, we simply must have the capacity to modernise and grow our business," Mr Penn said.
PPC is the biggest employer in the Shire of Northam and its Wooroloo pig processing facility, accredited to the highest export standards, processes 98 per cent of WA's pigs and supplies more than 55 per cent of Australia's fresh, chilled pork into Singapore.
