CCI backs industrial award system review

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia has appeared before the Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission in pursuit of a new modern and flexible industrial awards system.

The AIRC is undertaking a national 'award modernisation' review, the first stage in the Federal Government's program to streamline and update Australia's 4,000 plus federal and state industrial awards. Many existing awards are outdated, no longer relevant, and unnecessarily complicated.

CCI supports the award modernisation process and is pleased WA business has been given the opportunity to assist in the development of a fresh and new award system that benefits employers and employees.

The review is an important opportunity to deliver meaningful and much needed reform to the national industrial relations system that will strengthen the economy, assist business, and benefit employees.

In its submission to the Commission, CCI seeks the creation of a modern award system that encourages greater workplace flexibility, cuts regulation and red tape on business, and simplifies the awards system.

The AIRC has been requested by the Federal Government to develop a timetable for completing the modernisation process; identify a list of priority industries and occupations; and develop all future awards around a new flexibility clause.

To assist the Commission in this onerous task, CCI has identified a number of Western Australian industries and professions which should be given priority in the award modernisation process. These include retail, hospitality, metal trades, food manufacturing, and the clothing, footwear and textiles sector.

CCI urges the Commission to make the most of this important opportunity to encourage business and economic growth by simplifying the national award system.
