SUBIACO newcomer ClubSubi Cafe is offering something more than just coffee to people who work and live in the area. Owner Derek Burke says he wants to make this coffee shop a favourite for the locals.
“The name was born out of the concept. We want to target the people working in Subi or who live within a one-kilometre radius. There are about 18 cafes in Subi and most rely on passing traffic; we want them to think of us and come in,” he says.
“There will be loyalty programs with discount but it is also about knowing the people who come in the door. We will know them by name and, if ‘Bob’ comes in, we’ll have ‘Bob’s’ mug behind the counter and make his coffee without him needing to order it.”
And of course providing that client-focused service requires a dedicated team of professionals. Carla Harp is the cafe manager, having spent most of her career working in Canada. Derek, however, does not come from a hospitality background, something he believes is a positive attribute to running his cafe concept.
“Business principles are the same, you’re selling a product or service,” he says. “I’ve got an experienced team in and won’t get caught up working in the business. I will be working on the business.”
Derek likened the cafe concept to Dome.
“We’re a coffee shop that sells food,” he says.
But Derek says that, just like the Dome concept, ClubSubi Cafe has the potential to open in other suburbs around Perth.
ClubSubi Cafe is located on the site of the former Subi Sensations, just down from Food by Christopher Hiller on Rokeby Road.

Talented bar star Andy Freeman has departed from the stylish Onyx bar. Owner of Onyx, Davide Bianchi, is going to great lengths to find a highly qualified and passionate bar manager. Onyx marketing manager Sean Lofts said Davide was looking for someone with all the right skills but also with passion.
“He is looking for someone with all the skills, including interpersonal and managerial, but also someone who is as passionate about the business and the venue as he is,” Sean says.
And because finding the right person could be difficult, the team has begun head hunting and interviewing applicants for the position in the hope of finding the right person before the silly season really kicks off. For those interested in this summer’s best functions be sure to call the Onyx team and get your name on the database. You will be able to jump the queues, courtesy of the VIP list.
