Brews from the north and a Subiaco steak sandwich were among the winners at the state’s Australian Hotels Association Hotel and Hospitality awards this week.
Matso’s Broome Brewery was named best boutique brewery in the state, Subiaco’s Village Bar got the nod for the top steak sandwich in the state and the title of WA’s best hospitality venue was given to Rockpool Bar and Grill at Burswood.
Perth’s pub of the year is the newly refurbished Hyde Park Hotel while Yallingup’s Caves House Hotel took out the best regional venue award.
The Breakwater won for best presentation and service this year while the best small bar was the fairly recently opened Five Bar in Mount Lawley, neighbour to Malt Supper Club which took out the late night venue award.
Village Bar part-owner Amelia Goyder paid homage to head chef Aldren Teo and said being a runner up in the bar Menu, hotel redevelopment and marketing categories was significant considering the pub has been open for eight months.
Matso’s Marketing Manager Bodie Czeladka said the last 12 months for the brewery have been successful, following the launch of another product in Pearlers Pale Ale and wholesaling to the eastern states now in place.
“This is the first year we’ve entered the AHAWA Awards and our hard working team is totally thrilled, we hope it’s the start of many more,” according to Matso’s Brand Manager Justin Wiebrecht.
The win was apparently ironic for the managers of Caves House, Seashells. Managing director and tourism council president Paul King said the award was bittersweet given the group had been managing the hotel for receivers for the past two years. He made special acknowledgement of general manager Stephen Sheridan and his team who will continue to run the pub from early December 2011 on the behalf of the receivers.
“Whilst the Hotel has been in the hands of receivers for approximately two years, our team at Caves House has proactively worked to sustain and grow the hotel’s business and reputation,” he said.
“The focus over the past 12 months has been on the local community and the team has strived to create a new family-friendly dining style in keeping with Caves’ historic reputation as a great pub.
“This has succeeded and the Hotel has grown its local patronage as well as
continuing to enjoy hosting people from acrossWestern Australiacelebrating
weddings and special occasions, plus people visiting the region on holiday.”
