BGC has relinquished its spot as Australia’s most prolific home builder, but it is still the biggest builder in Western Australia, as the downturn in housing construction continues to be felt.
The Housing Industry Association today said BGC was the second-ranked builder in the nation and the top ranked in WA, with 4,049 starts.
Last year, BGC was ranked number one in the Housing 100, with 4,834 starts.
Metricon Homes made a big leap from fifth in 2014-15 to top this year’s survey, with 4,365 starts. Based in Victoria, Metricon also operates in Queensland, NSW and South Australia.
In WA, ABN Group was the second-ranked builder, however its starts fell from 3,631 in 2014-15, to 2,572 in the past financial year.
Other builders to experience big falls in activity were Pindan and Summit Homes Group, where housing starts fell by 1,328 and 1,108, respectively.
JWH Group rounded out WA’s top three with 1,099 starts.
Not a single builder in WA increased their housing starts in 2015-16, compared with the previous year, as a 22 per cent decline across the board starts to bite.
However, market share of the largest 20 builders in WA increased by 2 per cent, to 59 per cent in 2015-16.
