Attracting and retaining top-tier talent is one of the biggest obstacles facing business leaders today.
Attracting and retaining top-tier talent is one of the biggest obstacles facing business leaders today. Swift Networks' Chief Operating Officer, Aidan Sommerville, has a keen interest in tackling this pervasive challenge. Having managed 100s of people and teams across the defence force and corporate sectors, Aidan is no stranger to the challenges of attracting people and building high-performing teams.
"I could talk at length about this subject, which I am rather passionate about." Aidan states, "One key area critical to attracting and building teams is creating a community culture. A space where people feel they are part of something bigger, where everyone plays an important role, all towards a common goal. A safe and supportive environment like this naturally enables and encourages the team to speak up and share opinions. This is vital; people instinctively want to be heard and contribute, and need to trust they can do so."
Aidan talks about how building this community culture through organisational clarity and inter-team communication and collaboration significantly improves performance and engagement. Stating that it drives accountability within the team and enables team members to continuously challenge and push each other to collectively adapt, evolve and improve.
"This passion also reflects in the Swift product and service offering," Aidan said. "We are always looking to our clients for feedback on their day-to-day challenges as we continue to find areas we can help, systems and processes we can streamline, and inhibitors we can remove. Attracting and retaining talent has been a significant challenge, especially in our current, highly competitive times".
According to Aidan, another area that has always been challenging for his clients is communication and engagement across a business stretched from the city to the outback, with teams spread wide from site to site.
To combat this, Swift Networks, a long-standing partner of the mining industry, has honed an entertainment and engagement solution renowned for enhancing the quality of life for team members on site. "Historically, it was accepted that working in a FIFO environment came with compromises with village entertainment and connectivity." Aidan states, "However, this is no longer the case. Swift doesn't simply try to match the in-home experience. It goes one step further, providing a 'better than home' offering." Aidan emphasised Swift's focus on adaptation and innovation, which ensures that every end user gets a 5-star experience - ensuring personnel look forward to returning to their rooms at the end of a long shift.
Swift doesn't only connect and entertain team members on-site after work - their solution also enhances employees' on-the-job experiences. Swift's technology builds better work environments by bridging the traditional gaps between site-based crews and head office teams. Aidan pointed to several existing large-scale clients who have greatly benefitted from the operational efficiencies the Swift system offers, "our clients have reported significant increases in engagement, a reduction in knowledge gaps, and enhanced communication across traditional operational silos. We are seeing a variety of teams such as Health and Safety, People and Culture, Marketing and Communications, and On-site Lifestyle teams benefit the most as they adopt our systems and drive usage.”
This increase in connection and engagement is a vital piece of the puzzle. Retaining staff, Aidan notes, hinges on ensuring they feel a sense of belonging and connection with their peers, and Swift plays a pivotal role in transforming any mining camp into a thriving community. Swift recognises that the time spent on-site represents a significant component of employees' lives. Establishing connections and social networks beyond the confines of the working day is integral to supporting the mental health and well-being of personnel.
As a result, the Swift system is designed to facilitate connections among individuals. Aidan emphasised Swift's commitment to elevating the employee experience by fostering a strong sense of community wherever their solutions are deployed. He summarised, "Ultimately, Swift's core mission is to create opportunities for people to connect, which serves as the bedrock of our ability to help our clients retain and nurture top-tier talent."
Aidan is enthusiastic about the future with Swift, "We are committed to supporting new and existing clients by continually enhancing our product offering. We're excited to continue to add features that make Swift a must-have tool for our clients, helping them boost productivity, enhance engagement, and keep people connected and engaged, and as a result, attract and retain the best talent out there!"
