$3.4m for refugee support

Communicare, Save the Children and Centrecare have joined forces to deliver a new federal program for migrants and refugees to Western Australia called Settle In.

Lead agency Communicare will receive $3.4 million from the Commonwealth over the period of the agreement to 2022.

The program will focus on social participation, economic wellbeing, independence, personal wellbeing and community connectedness.

The three organisations will support newly arrived refugees and migrants in Mandurah and suburbs across Perth’s south-east and south-west suburbs. 

“Communicare, Save the Children and Centrecare have many years’ experience working with vulnerable people in the WA community,” Communicare chief executive Melissa Perry said.

“As partners, we are well positioned to deliver the much-needed support to humanitarian entrants and vulnerable migrants who are new to the country.

“Together we have the knowledge, skills and experience to identify, understand and address the unique and often complex needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“Services will range from mainstream offerings, such as helping them to improve their English language skills, education and job training prospects, through to more complex support for individuals who present with a range of factors that negatively impact on their settlement in Australia.”
