The state government has provided a further $26 million to the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research’s Square Kilometre Array radio telescope project.
ICRAR director Peter Quinn said the extension of funding came at the perfect time for the centre to take advantage of preparations for the SKA project.
The funding will be provided through to 2019.
The ICRAR is a joint venture between Curtin University and the University of Western Australia.
Earlier this year, the centre received almost $5 million from the federal government to go towards the SKA, part of a $19 million package.
“With this support from the state government, ICRAR will continue our international leadership in astronomy, new generation radio telescope engineering, and advanced supercomputing and software systems,” Professor Quinn said.
“ICRAR will be a major part of pre-construction work for the Square Kilometre Array, building on the skill and knowledge we gained from the Murchison Widefield Array.
