Dr Tony Buti has been a Labor Party Member of the WA Legislative Assembly for Armadale since 2010.
He became the Minister of Finance, Lands, Sport and Recreation, Citizenship and Multicultural Interests in the McGowan government following Labor's win in the 2021 state election. In the December 2021 cabinet reshuffle Dr Buti relinquished the Lands and Sport & Recreation portfolios but took on Racing & Gaming and Aboriginal Affairs portfolios. In the 2022 cabinet reshuffle, he had a change of portfolios and became the Minister for Education, Aboriginal Affairs, Citizenship and Multicultural Interests.
Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, Dr Buti kept the same portfolios as Minister for Education, Aboriginal Affairs, Citizenship and Multicultural Interests under the Cook government.
Dr Buti studied Law at the University of Western Australia and the Australian National University, and has a PhD from Oxford University which dealt with Guardianship Law and the Stolen Generations.
Dr Buti is also the author of several books on the removal of Aboriginal children from their families, sports law, and an overview of the Perth Mint Swindle.
