Clarity lacking on $6.6m Huawei call
Millions of dollars were wasted and transparency derailed in state’s telco deal.
Sue Ellery is the Labor Party Member of the Western Australia Legislative Council for South Metropolitan Region.
She was leader of the Legislative Council, and Minister for Education and Training in the McGowan government following Labor's win in the 2017 state election. In the 2022 cabinet reshuffle, Ms Ellery relinquished the Education and Training portfolios and became the Minister for Finance, Commerce and Women's Interests.
Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, Ms Ellery kept the same portfolios as Minister for Finance, Commerce and Women's Interests under the Cook government.
Prior to Labor's state election win in March 2017, she was Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and Shadow Minister for Education & Children's Interests.
Ms Ellery joined the Labor Party while at university, and in 1983 was the national women's officer for the Australian Union of Students. Prior to entering politics, she worked in the trade union movement including as an industrial advocate for the Liquor, Hospitality, and Miscellaneous Workers' Union.
