Simon Bellas is a construction claims and disputes authority whose practice is focused on large-scale energy and resources projects and related infrastructure with particular experience in offshore contracts. He acts for owners and a range of major contractors across industry sectors including oil and gas, mining, infrastructure construction projects and disputes. He has managed some of the largest international arbitrations and litigation in the Asia Pacific region.
Mr Bellas is often engaged as project counsel before disputes arise with the aim of avoiding or minimising claims and disputes. He has also been involved in mediations and expert determinations, and has successfully prosecuted and defended many adjudication claims.
Mr Bellas has significant experience with extension of time, variation, delay and disruption claims, as well as advising on contract termination issues. He has worked on several international arbitrations and had been based in Singapore and Kazakhstan.
Mr Bellas joined Jones Day in June 2014 and was a partner of its global disputes practice. He became a partner-in-charge of the Perth office in January 2016 before relocating to the firm's office in Singapore in early 2019. Mr Bellas will return to Australia and work in the firm's Melbourne office from September 2021 where he will service clients on major construction, engineering, procurement, and infrastructure disputes.
