Community leaders relish competitive environment
Western Australia’s five universities have always faced unique challenges.
Ruth Shean AO was the director general of the Western Australian government’s Department of Workforce Development, commissioner for Public Sector Standards, held government CEO roles including as director general of the Disability Services Commission, and acting director general of the Department for Community Development.
Dr Shean has also been a non-government chief executive (of the Cerebral Palsy Association), and has held leadership positions on both state and federal government reviews and committees. She has also been on governing councils of both Curtin and Murdoch Universities.
In June 2022, Dr Shean was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to public administration, and to not-for-profit and community health organisations.

The state government has engaged former minister Cheryl Edwardes and former Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA chief executive John Langoulant to lead a review of the 11 state training providers.
Five Western Australian women have been appointed to senior board positions, including Marion Fulker joining the Infrastructure Australia board and Samantha Tough chairing Horizon Power.
A total of 80 Western Australians were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2022 including Carmen Lawrence, Murray McHenry, Amber Hasler and Geoffrey Stooke.
