New roles for Vandongen, Owen
The state government has appointed Sam Vandongen to the Supreme Court bench and Robert Owen to head the office of Director of Public Prosecutions.
Robert Owen was a former police and intelligence officer with the WA Police Force and the Corruption and Crime Commission.
He was admitted to practice as a lawyer in 2008. In 2011, Mr Owen started Owen Criminal Lawyers before joining the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA in 2013 where he served as counsel and oversaw a large criminal caseload.
Between May 2019 and May 2022, Mr Owen was both a senior state prosecutor and acting senior consultant state prosecutor for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions where he managed complex court matters and assisted other prosecutors. Mr Owen was appointed acting director of public prosecutions in July 2022, and headed a trial team with oversight of senior prosecutors and their matters proceeding to trial. He became Western Australia’s director of public prosecutions in October 2022.
