Lt-Gen Peter Leahy AC retired from the Australian Army in July 2008 after a 37-year career and six years as chief of army.
Since leaving the army, he has been appointed as professor and foundation director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra.
Lt-Gen Leahy is the chief defence advisor to the Queensland Government, has been a director of Electro Optic Systems Holdings since May 2009, and a director of Citadel Group since June 2014. He is also a member of the advisory board to China Matters, and a technical advisor to WarpForge.
In August 2014, Lt-Gen Leahy was appointed to the Australian Federal Government's First Principles Review Team, an initiative designed to ensure that the Australian Department of Defence is fit-for-purpose and able to promptly respond to future challenges.
In 1995, Lt-Gen Leahy was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia, upgraded to Officer in 2002 and elevated to Companion in 2007. He was recognised internationally with the award of the United States of America Legion of Merit in the rank of Commander, the Republic of Singapore Meritorious Service Medal (Military), the Cambodian Royal Order of Sahametrei in the rank of Commander, and the Malaysian Armed Forces Order for Valour in the rank of Gallant Commander.
