Michael Pezzullo AO was the Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in October 2014 and became Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs from December 2017 to November 2023 following a reshaping of departments. Prior to that, he was chief operating officer and subsequently became chief executive of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service where he was responsible for offshore maritime security, border-related intelligence, national security and law enforcement programmes, integrity and professional standards, and corporate operations.
In 2020, Mr Pezzullo was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to public administration through leadership roles in the areas of national security, border control and immigration.
