Opinion: The departure of career public servant Stephen Wood has raised questions about the role of the bureaucracy in providing frank and fearless advice.
John Langoulant AO is a prominent Perth business leader and company director with over 40 years of experience across the business, government and not-for-profit sectors.
His chief executive experience included running Oakajee Port and Rail, Australian Capital Equity and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA. Prior to those roles, he was the WA Under Treasurer from 1995 to 2004. He has chaired major inquiries, including the Major Stadia Taskforce in 2007 and the special inquiry into the Barnett government’s financial management in 2018.
Mr Langoulant also chaired a number of boards including Australian Gas Infrastructure Group, GESB, Telethon Kids Institute, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, Northern Territory’s Power and Water Corporation; and was a director of the National Disability Insurance Agency.
In October 2021, Mr Langoulant became the Agent General for Western Australia in the United Kingdom/Europe. He will work closely with Western Australia’s Investment and Trade Commissioners in attracting further investment, promoting trading relationships and representing Western Australia within the United Kingdom and European markets.
Mr Langoulant was awarded an AO in 2010 for distinguished service to business and commerce, and was named WA Citizen of the Year in 2011.
