DESPITE a major spat with federal Liberal deputy leader Julie Bishop, political observer Peter van Onselen still puts her in his top 10 most influential Western Australians.
Gary Gray AO was the Federal Member for Brand in Western Australia from 2007 to 2016, representing the Australian Labor Party. Mr Gray held senior positions in the Australian Government as the Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Tourism, Minister for Small Business, Special Minister of State and the Minister for the Public Service and Integrity. He retired from politics in 2016. Mr Gray enjoyed a distinguished career at Woodside Petroleum and was general manager of external affairs at Mineral Resources. Mr Gray was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001, and appointed Officer of the Order of Australia in January 2003 for services to the Australian Labor Party and to politics
through the introduction of modem campaign techniques, fundraising protocols for all political parties, affirmative action guidelines, and by strengthening the Party's organisational and financial structure. In June 2020, he was appointed as Australia’s Ambassador to Ireland, serving in this role until 2024.
