Macknay to lead HSF
Perth’s largest law firm will be led by a woman for the first time, with Elizabeth Macknay appointed office managing partner of Herbert Smith Freehills.
Elizabeth (Liz) Macknay has more than 20 years of experience working in Perth and Sydney, in both litigation and arbitration. She is a commercial litigator with particular expertise in corporate regulatory matters, corporate crime and investigations, and international arbitration.
Ms Macknay helps clients resolve disputes primarily in the mining and energy sectors, and specialises in advising Australian and international clients in the mining and resources sectors. Her focus is on corporations law and corporate regulatory matters.
Her experience also includes providing front-end & back-end anti-bribery and corruption advice.
Ms Macknay joined Herbert Smith Freehills in December 2003 and was appointed a partner in June 2011. She became the first woman to be appointed a managing partner of its Perth office in May 2021.
Ms Macknay is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association, Transparency International, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre Users Council, the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia Working Party on Foreign Corrupt Practices and Corporate Crime and Corruption, and the Western Australian Regional Council of Redkite.
She was a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, and was an elected member of the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia since April 2009.

Herbert Smith Freehills has signed a deal to relocate its offices from QV1 along St Georges Terrace to One The Esplanade at Elizabeth Quay, once construction is complete.
The green energy transition is seen as one of the largest opportunities for WA law firms, with two mid-tier players leading the way.
Major law firms in Perth are increasing their graduate intake as they enjoy strong demand for their services.
