The Honourable Justice David Newnes was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 25 June 2007, after serving as a Master of the Court since 2003. He was appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal on 24 February 2009 until his resignation in April 2017.

Justice Newnes was admitted to practice after completing articles with Muir Williams Nicholson in 1978. He practised as a solicitor with the firm until 1982. He worked as a solicitor at Mallesons Stephen Jaques until 1985 and was then a litigation partner at the firm until 1994. He was a litigation partner with Blake Dawson Waldron and head of the litigation group in the firm's Perth office.
